A crack across Eva's phone screen made every message look as if it had been folded. At lunch, her coworkers showed her advertisements for new models. One could take amazing night photographs. Another came in a colour she immediately loved.
Eva opened her spending notebook that evening. She had planned to replace her worn work shoes and pay for a visit to her sister. A new phone would not make either plan impossible, but it would make both feel uncomfortable. She wondered whether she needed a new device or simply wanted the feeling of one.
A repair shop offered to replace the screen, but the worker first checked whether the phone had other problems. It worked well apart from the crack. He explained the price and the time needed, without trying to sell her a larger package. Eva left it with him and borrowed an old phone for the afternoon.
When she collected it, the familiar case still had a mark from a spilled coffee. She cleaned it at home and changed the background picture. The phone did not feel exciting for long. That was fine. Two weeks later, it took a perfectly clear photograph of her sister laughing beside a suitcase.
