Friday lunch was becoming the most uncomfortable part of Soren's office week. His team always chose a different restaurant. Nobody discussed prices, and everyone divided the bill equally, even when Soren ordered only soup and water.
He had recently started paying for an evening course. He could afford a meal, but not an expensive surprise every Friday. Rather than explain his whole budget, he began saying that he was busy. After three weeks, his colleague Amira asked whether someone had upset him.
Soren almost blamed the workload. Then he told her the truth. Amira admitted that she also disliked paying for other people's extra drinks. At the next team meeting, she proposed choosing a place with prices everyone could see beforehand and paying separately. Soren added that packed lunches in the courtyard could be another option.
The first courtyard lunch was windy, and a paper bag escaped across the stones. Everyone laughed while Soren chased it. Two colleagues still preferred restaurants, so the team kept both choices on different Fridays. Soren no longer needed an excuse to stay at his desk. He could join lunch without spending the afternoon wondering what he should give up that weekend.
