The Patel family enjoyed sitting on their balcony under a string of bright lights. Across the narrow courtyard, their neighbor Agnes could see the lights through her bedroom curtains. She liked the friendly view early in the evening, but not after midnight.
Agnes did not want the family to stop using their balcony. She wrote a note asking if they could turn the lights off at eleven. Then she put her name and flat number at the bottom, so they could easily reply.
The next day, Mrs Patel came over to discuss it. She had not known that the lights reached Agnes's window. They tested a different position for the string and agreed to switch it off at eleven, even when someone was still outside.
That Friday, Agnes invited Mrs Patel to look from her bedroom window. The new position was much better. At eleven, the bright lights went dark, but quiet voices continued across the courtyard. Agnes closed her curtains and went to bed without needing another note.
