Every month, our old school friends met at a long restaurant table. We were twelve people, and I usually talked only to the two sitting beside me. My friend Ruby sat at the far end three months in a row.
I missed talking with her, so I suggested a smaller meeting between the big dinners. Four of us could have coffee, and another group could choose a different day. Nobody had to attend every meeting or explain why they were absent.
Ruby invited three people to her kitchen the following Tuesday. We stayed for an hour and heard about her new hobby, her brother's move, and the terrible play she had seen. I finally told her about something funny from my own week.
At the next large dinner, the group was still twelve people. This time, we changed seats halfway through the evening. Ruby waved from the other end before moving closer. The big gathering and the small coffees now gave us different ways to stay in touch.
