Our group of friends bought a large gift for every birthday. Usually, one person chose it and asked everyone else for money. Last month, the price was much higher than usual. I could not pay my share without changing my weekly plans.
I wrote privately to the friend collecting the money. I explained that the amount was too much for me. She answered kindly and said two other people had the same problem. None of us had wanted to spoil the celebration.
We asked the group about a different plan. People could bring a small personal gift, write a card, or simply come. Nobody would keep a list of payments. At first, a few friends worried that the birthday person might feel disappointed.
At the next celebration, there were homemade biscuits, a funny drawing, and several cards. The birthday friend spent ten minutes reading them aloud. My present was a list of our favorite shared memories. She asked for another list next year.
