After joining the language exchange club, Isabel tried to speak English with everyone at once. The meetings were friendly but busy, and people changed partners every five minutes. She often thought of a good answer just as the next bell rang.
One afternoon, she asked another member, Walt, to stay for a short chat after the meeting. They sat on a bench outside the hall. Without a bell or a list of questions, Isabel found it easier to explain what she meant.
Walt waited when she needed a word and did not finish her sentences. In return, Isabel helped him practice a few phrases in Spanish. They agreed to keep their bench conversations short, because both of them had families waiting at home.
Soon, two other members asked to join them. Isabel suggested meeting ten minutes before the main session instead. The small group now began each week with one slow conversation. When the first bell rang inside, Isabel already had something she wanted to say.
