Every Saturday, June called her uncle in another city. They usually talked for fifteen minutes. Recently, their calls had become difficult because the sound was poor. They spent most of the time repeating sentences, then ended the call feeling tired.
June suggested sending a letter once a month as well as making shorter calls. Her uncle liked the idea because he could read a letter slowly over several cups of tea. June bought a writing pad and began with news about her neighbors.
A week later, she received three handwritten pages from him. He described his chess club, his broken umbrella, and a meal with an old friend. There was also a small drawing of the club's very large clock beside the window.
Their next phone call lasted only five minutes, but it was cheerful. June asked about the clock, and her uncle asked about her neighbors. The letters had given them things to discuss without filling every minute with questions they could not hear clearly.
