At our neighborhood club meeting, three members discussed every idea while the others watched. We needed to choose a day for a street lunch, but after half an hour we still had no date. Several people had not spoken at all.
Rosa placed a red pen in the middle of the table. She suggested passing it around once. Each person could speak while holding the pen, or pass it on without speaking. Nobody else could interrupt during that person's short turn.
The quiet members had important information. Saturday was difficult for the families with swimming lessons, and Sunday morning was bad for the church choir. When the pen reached me, I suggested Sunday at two. This worked for almost everyone in the room.
We wrote the date on the board and finished ten minutes early. Rosa left the pen beside the meeting book. At our next meeting, the loudest member picked it up, looked around, and passed it to the person beside him first.
