The reading club met on the first Monday of every month. This time, David suggested a book with six hundred pages. Several members looked worried. They liked reading, but they also had jobs, children, and other things to do.
Anita wanted to say no, yet she did not want to hurt David's feelings. She asked how much time everyone could spend reading each week. Their answers were very different. One person had three hours, while another had only twenty minutes.
David put his large book back in his bag. Then he showed them a thin collection of stories by another writer. Each member could read one story before the next meeting. People with more time could read the whole collection.
The following month, every member had something to say. David had read all the stories, but Anita's favorite was one he had almost forgotten. He opened the book again to find it. Their discussion lasted longer than anyone had expected.
