When Greg saw an advertisement for a plumbing course, he wanted to register immediately. He hoped to learn simple practical skills for his job in building maintenance. The course title sounded perfect, but the advertisement gave very little information about the lessons.
He called the training centre with three questions written on a card. Did students need previous experience? Were tools provided? Did the price include all the materials? The receptionist answered the first two questions but needed to check the third with the teacher.
She called back that afternoon. The course included tools and materials, but it was for people who already had basic plumbing experience. Greg had none. The receptionist suggested a beginners' class that started two weeks later at the same centre.
Greg registered for the later class. He kept the little card in his notebook because he planned to take more courses in the future. On the first evening, everyone in his group was a beginner. He could ask simple questions without feeling behind the others.
