A new café was opening on Friday, and the staff practised together on Thursday afternoon. The manager invited three colleagues from a nearby office to act as customers. They ordered drinks, asked about cakes and waited while the new team worked.
At first, everything went well. Then two customers asked for their drinks to take away. Nobody knew where the paper lids were. The cups stood ready on the counter while three workers searched different cupboards. One customer changed her order during the wait.
After the practice, the team sat down to discuss what happened. They moved the lids beside the paper cups and agreed how to tell the kitchen about a changed order. The manager asked the visitors to return for one final short practice.
This time, the drinks reached the customers with the right lids and cakes. The visitors paid nothing because they had helped with the test. As they left, one asked when the café would really open. The team answered together, 'Tomorrow at eight,' and went back to preparing the counter.
