On Sunday, the park's smooth track was open for beginner roller skating. Marcus borrowed skates and protective equipment from the activity centre. He had watched other skaters moving quickly around the track, and he hoped to do the same that morning.
Standing up was harder than he expected. His feet moved in different directions, and he held the wooden rail beside the practice area. An instructor showed him how to bend his knees and make small movements before trying to go faster.
Marcus practised near the rail for half an hour. A woman nearby was learning too, and they laughed about their slow progress. When the instructor said they were ready, they started one lap together at the quiet end of the track.
They did not race. Marcus stopped twice and followed the instructor's advice each time. At the end of the lap, he looked back at the distance he had covered. He returned the skates with tired legs and booked another beginner session, not the fast group he had imagined joining.
