A free drawing afternoon brought Elena to the town art museum. Visitors could sit in one room and sketch their favourite painting. Elena packed several coloured pens because she wanted to copy the bright flowers in a picture she knew well.
At the entrance, a museum worker explained that only pencils were allowed in the drawing room. Pens could leave marks on the chairs or floor. Elena looked at her bag and felt disappointed. She had not brought a single pencil.
Fortunately, the worker had a box of pencils for visitors to borrow. Elena chose one and found a seat in front of the flowers. Without colour, she looked more carefully at the shapes of the leaves and the dark spaces between them.
Her drawing was very different from the painting, but she was happy with it. She returned the pencil and thanked the worker. At home, she placed her coloured pens beside the sketchbook. She could add colour later, but first she wanted to show her sister the pencil version.
