Martin had never tried fishing, so he joined a beginner session at the town lake. The club supplied the equipment and arranged permission for the group. A helper showed him where to stand and asked him to keep clear of other people's lines.
At first, Martin watched the water every second. He expected a fish to arrive quickly. The helper showed him how to hold the rod comfortably and explained that waiting was part of the activity. Martin sat down on a small folding chair.
After a while, he began noticing things around him. A leaf moved slowly across the water. Two birds landed near the far bank. The man beside him caught a small fish, and the helper showed the group how to handle it carefully.
Martin caught nothing before the session ended. He still thanked the helper and asked about the next beginner morning. On his way home, he sent his brother a photo of the quiet lake. 'No fish today,' he wrote, 'but I finally sat still for an hour.'
