The nature centre offered an evening walk to look at stars. Denis booked two places for himself and his uncle. They brought warm coats and small torches. However, when they arrived, thick clouds covered most of the sky above the park.
The leader explained that they might not see many stars. Anyone could move their booking to another evening. Denis's uncle wanted to stay because he rarely walked in the park after dark. Denis agreed, and they joined the smaller group outside.
They followed a clear path while the leader showed them how to use their torches without shining into other people's eyes. Near a pond, they heard frogs. Farther on, they stopped to listen to the wind moving through dry leaves.
Only one bright star appeared between the clouds before the walk ended. Denis's uncle pointed it out first. Back at the centre, they booked a clear-weather visit for another week. Denis wrote 'night sounds' beside the first booking in his notebook, because that was what he remembered best.
