Once a month, Basil counted the office supplies before ordering more. He enjoyed the quiet task at the end of the day. This month, a new colleague, Wren, offered to help. They divided the cupboard into two sections and began counting.
Basil counted pens and notebooks while Wren checked paper and envelopes. When they compared their lists, Wren had written 'four envelopes'. Basil opened the cupboard in surprise. There were clearly more than four. Then he understood: she had counted packets, not individual envelopes.
They checked the order form. The supplier sold envelopes in packets of fifty, so Wren's way was actually more useful. Basil changed the heading on their list to show the unit for each item. Some items needed individual numbers, while others needed packet numbers.
They finished before closing time and placed a smaller order than usual because there was already enough paper. Basil saved the clearer list for next month. Wren put the four packets back in one row, with every label facing the cupboard door.
