The Practice Customer Wants to Complain

In a customer service class, the adults worked in pairs. One person played a shop assistant, and the other played an unhappy customer. When it was Ruben's turn to complain, he spoke so quietly that his partner could hardly hear him.

Ruben did not like pretending to be angry. The teacher explained that a complaint did not need a loud voice. He could explain the problem clearly and ask for a solution. His practice card said that he had received the wrong size of work boots.

He tried again. This time, he described the order, showed an imaginary receipt and asked how to exchange the boots. His partner checked the details and offered a new pair. They completed the conversation without either person raising their voice.

Then they changed roles. Ruben listened while his partner described a damaged bag. He almost interrupted, but remembered to let her finish. After class, he wrote two useful phrases in his notebook. He wanted to use them during his next shift at the shop.
