Elsa joined a computer class because her new job included simple office records. During the first lesson, the teacher opened a spreadsheet with hundreds of numbers. Elsa felt lost before she even touched the keyboard. She did not understand what the numbers meant.
The teacher closed that file and asked the class a different question. How much tea and coffee did their imaginary office need each week? Everyone understood that problem. They made a list of drinks, packet sizes and prices in separate columns.
Elsa entered the price of tea twice by mistake. Her total looked too high, so her partner helped her check each row. They found the extra price and removed it. Then Elsa learnt how to let the computer add the numbers automatically.
At the end, the teacher opened the first file again. It did not seem quite so frightening now. Elsa could see rows, columns and a total. She saved the tea list to practise with it before the next class.
