Every tool in the repair workshop had a place on a board. One morning, Dan needed the small screwdriver, but its place was empty. He checked the work tables and asked his colleague Kim. She had not seen it since the previous afternoon.
Dan borrowed a screwdriver from the room next door and finished his repair. At lunchtime, Kim found the missing tool inside a customer bag. She remembered putting it there while checking a broken radio. Luckily, the customer had not collected the bag yet.
Kim wanted a way to remember where borrowed tools went. She put a small card under each space on the board. Workers could write their names on the cards when they took a tool and remove them when they returned it.
That afternoon, Dan took two tools and wrote his name twice. Kim looked at the board and knew exactly who to ask. At closing time, every tool was back, and every card was blank again.
