Our neighbors kept a large shoe rack in the shared space beside our door. At first, it held three pairs of shoes. By autumn, there were boots, sports bags, and a box of toys. Carrying our shopping inside became difficult.
I spoke to my neighbor Helen one evening while we collected our letters. I explained that we needed more room near the door. She looked at the growing pile and laughed with surprise. From her doorway, it had not seemed so large.
We moved the rack closer to her wall and carried the bags into her flat. Then we stood outside my door with two full shopping bags to test the space. I could enter easily, and Helen could still reach her shoes.
The next week, Helen placed a narrow mat under the rack. She told her family that everything had to fit on it. One small boot was outside the edge on Monday. By Tuesday, it had found its way back beside the others.
