The Repair Manual Behind a Password

A public theatre owned twelve programmable lights that had worked reliably for years. When one stopped turning, technician Sal opened its cover and found a damaged gear. The manufacturer would sell a replacement, but the repair instructions were locked behind an account available only to approved service companies. Their nearest technician could not visit before opening night.

Sal could probably fit the gear without instructions. However, guessing inside equipment hanging above an audience was not a risk he wanted to take. The theatre director suggested borrowing lights, which would consume the remaining budget for costumes. Sal called the manufacturer again, this time asking why a publicly purchased object came with information its owner could not read.

The support worker admitted that the restriction covered simple repairs as well as dangerous electrical work. She could not change the policy, but she forwarded Sal's photographs to an engineer. By afternoon, the engineer had provided a limited procedure for replacing the gear and checking its movement. Sal followed it on a workbench, then asked another technician to inspect the result.

The show opened with all twelve lights. Sal might have left the matter there, except that the theatre was about to buy new equipment. He added access to appropriate repair information to the purchasing requirements. One supplier complained that this favoured smaller companies. The director replied that price was not their only concern. Sal filed the approved procedure where future staff could find it, rather than leaving another person to negotiate the same password.
