A public advice centre replaced spoken names with numbers to make its waiting room more private. Receptionist Ada welcomed the change until a new display showed each number beside the reason for the appointment. Labels such as debt support and family dispute appeared in large letters. People could connect a category with whoever stood up when the number flashed.
The software supplier explained that the categories helped visitors find the correct desk. Ada suggested showing desk numbers instead, but the standard settings did not allow that combination. Her manager asked whether the problem was serious enough to delay the launch. After all, clients had previously heard one another's names. Ada replied that improving one kind of privacy did not excuse introducing another exposure.
While the supplier prepared a change, the centre used the display for numbers only and asked staff to guide visitors discreetly. This required more walking, especially on busy mornings. One adviser complained that the staff had been promised efficiency, not extra duties. Ada agreed and kept a record of the added time so the temporary solution would not quietly become an unfunded permanent arrangement.
The revised screen arrived two weeks later, showing a queue number and a desk. Ada tested it from every chair before approving it. A client asked why the display had changed twice in a month. She gave a straightforward explanation rather than claiming that the entire process had gone smoothly. He nodded, then asked whether the clock on the screen could also be corrected. It was six minutes slow, a simpler problem that still deserved fixing.
