A gallery offered automated image descriptions for visitors who used screen readers. Curator Vera tested the system on a portrait and heard it describe a cheerful woman celebrating a wedding. The painting actually showed a person wearing ceremonial clothes at a farewell gathering. The expression was difficult to interpret, and the event was explained only in the artist's notes.

Vera had expected occasional mistakes about colours or objects. Instead, the description confidently supplied an emotional story. Replacing every generated caption with an expert account would exceed the small gallery's budget. Leaving the system untouched would give some visitors an interpretation that sighted viewers were free to question for themselves. She invited an accessibility consultant to review a sample.

The consultant objected to a proposed warning that simply said descriptions might be inaccurate. Such a warning would transfer the problem to visitors without offering better access. Together they separated observable details from background information and interpretation. Staff wrote concise descriptions for the current exhibition, consulting artists where possible. Automated drafts remained useful, but none would be published without review.

At a preview, a visitor listened to the revised portrait description and said she imagined the central figure looking determined. Vera had always thought the face seemed uncertain. Neither felt obliged to settle the difference. For once, the description had supplied enough information for a disagreement without deciding the feeling in advance. The gallery opened with fewer audio descriptions than originally planned, and a clear schedule for adding the rest rather than pretending that instant coverage meant equal access.
