A Drone Above the Closed Courtyard

The housing authority hired a drone operator to inspect roof damage without erecting scaffolding. Engineer Yasmin watched the camera feed as the aircraft crossed a shared courtyard. A resident appeared below, reading beside an open window. His face was not relevant to the roof, but it remained sharp in the recorded video.

The operator offered to blur it later. Yasmin asked where the original recording would be stored and who would have access. He explained that all flight videos were automatically uploaded to his company's training library, where new staff learned how to identify building defects. The authority had requested an inspection, not agreed to supply footage for another organisation's internal courses.

Stopping the flight would mean rescheduling the remaining roofs and notifying tenants again. Yasmin stopped it anyway, then called the authority's contract officer. They arranged a revised flight path and disabled the training upload. Relevant roof images would be retained for maintenance records; incidental images of residents would be removed during a documented review. The operator complained that nobody had asked these questions before.

The second flight took place a week later. This time, notices explained the camera's purpose, the inspection period and a contact for concerns. The resident from the courtyard phoned to ask whether he had to stay indoors. Yasmin told him no and adjusted the schedule around the busiest hours outside. The roofs still needed repairs. At least the inspection no longer required residents to surrender ordinary use of their courtyard to make the paperwork convenient.
