The Prize Hidden in the Terms

Illustrator Dena entered a competition to design posters for a public science festival. The brief promised a prize and an exhibition for shortlisted work. After submitting her drawings, she noticed a clause allowing the organisers to use every entry permanently, whether it won or not. She had been concentrating on the theme and deadline when she first read the page.

The festival director said the clause came from an old legal template. They did not intend to exploit unsuccessful entries; they simply needed permission to display submissions. Dena asked why the wording extended to merchandise and future campaigns. He admitted that it was broader than necessary, but changing it after the deadline seemed administratively difficult.

Dena considered withdrawing quietly. Instead, she wrote to the other shortlisted artists, quoting the clause without claiming to represent them. Several shared her concern; one preferred not to risk the opportunity. They jointly requested a limited exhibition permission, with separate agreements for any further use. The director consulted the festival board, which was more worried about postponing the exhibition than about keeping a clause nobody could defend.

The organisers sent all entrants revised terms and allowed withdrawals. Dena accepted and eventually received second prize, which covered little more than her materials. The winner was the artist who had declined to join their request. Dena congratulated him sincerely. The change had not been a test of loyalty, and she did not want a better contract to become another condition that artists had to satisfy before deserving recognition.
