At a family wedding, Aisha wore a red scarf that had belonged to her great-aunt. Everyone said it suited her. Later, an older cousin asked if she knew why the scarf was important. Aisha said she assumed it had been expensive. The cousin laughed and shook her head.
Her great-aunt had bought it with money from her first job, against her family's advice. They had wanted her to choose a sensible grey coat. Instead, she bought the scarf and wore it to a dance, where she met the woman who became her closest friend.
For years, the two friends had passed the scarf between them before important occasions. It had appeared at interviews, birthdays and difficult family meetings. Aisha had thought she was wearing a fashion item. Now she wondered whether she should take it off and keep it safely in a box.
Her cousin objected. The scarf had never been valuable because it stayed clean in a cupboard. Aisha wore it through the rest of the wedding, taking care when dessert arrived. Before leaving, she lent it to her younger sister, who had to give a speech the next morning. She told her the whole story first. The sister listened, touched the soft cloth and promised to bring it back with another occasion attached to it.
