On Saturdays, Leila usually ran with friends beside the canal. This week, however, she had offered to stand at a corner during their club's short race. Her job sounded simple: hold a yellow sign and direct runners towards the wooden bridge. She expected a rather dull morning.
Before the start, a volunteer placed her beside two nearly identical paths. The sign pointed left, but the written instructions said right. Leila looked at the empty paths and felt uncertain. If I guess, she thought, everyone behind the first runner will probably make the same mistake.
She called the organiser, who checked the route and discovered that the sign belonged to last year's race. There was no time to bring another one. Leila turned it over, drew a large arrow on the back and added a picture of the bridge. Then she took her position.
The runners passed without trouble, and several thanked her as they turned. Afterwards, Leila joined her friends for tea. They talked about their times, while she explained her unexpected problem. Next week she wanted to run again, but she also wanted to check the signs on Friday. A quiet corner, she had discovered, could hold quite a lot of responsibility.
