The Repair Table Accepts an Empty Box

At the monthly repair café, volunteers helped neighbours mend ordinary household objects. Jo arrived with an empty box and looked embarrassed. She had promised to bring her broken desk lamp, but she had forgotten it on the kitchen table. She nearly turned around before reaching the welcome desk.

A volunteer invited her to stay for the opening discussion anyway. Today's topic was how to describe a problem clearly before anyone tried to repair it. Jo listened while people explained loose handles, torn bags and chairs that rocked. She realised that she could barely describe what was wrong with her own lamp.

Without examining it, nobody could offer a proper answer. Instead, Jo helped at the welcome table, writing down each visitor's description and attaching it to the right object. She asked simple questions whenever a note was unclear. The volunteers appreciated being able to read the problem before beginning a conversation.

Jo returned the following month with the lamp and a much better description of what had happened. After leaving it with the appropriate volunteer, she took her place at the welcome desk again. Her empty box had not produced a repaired object, but it had accidentally introduced her to a useful task she could continue doing.
