A former railway line near town was now a walking and cycling path. Filip wanted to ride through its short tunnel. He checked that his bicycle lights worked and started early, before the path became busy with families and dog walkers.
Inside the tunnel, he heard a loud voice behind him. For a moment, he thought someone was calling his name. He slowed down and looked carefully over his shoulder. A group of walkers stood near the entrance, testing the sound of their voices.
The tunnel made every shout seem longer and louder. Filip continued slowly towards the daylight at the other end. Outside, he stopped in a wide area to drink some water. Soon the walkers came through and asked if their voices had surprised him.
'Only at first,' Filip said. One walker explained that she remembered trains using the tunnel when she was a child. Filip listened to her story, then continued his ride. On the return journey, the tunnel was quiet except for the gentle sound of his wheels.
