At an adult cooking class, Omar and Beth shared a table. They were learning to make vegetable soup. The teacher gave everyone a recipe, but Beth could not read one part clearly. A drop of water had covered the number beside the word 'carrots'.
Omar guessed that they needed eight carrots. Beth thought the number was three. Instead of choosing, they asked the teacher. She checked her own page and said three. Eight carrots would fill most of their small cooking pot.
While Omar washed the vegetables, Beth copied the recipe into her notebook in pencil. She left space beside each step for useful notes. The teacher showed them how to cut the pieces to a similar size so they would cook together.
Their soup was ready before the end of class. Beth added one final note: 'Ask when a number is unclear.' Omar tasted the soup and agreed. He was glad that their first meal together did not need a much larger pot.
