The children in our building liked racing along the hallway after school. Their laughter was pleasant, but their feet made a lot of noise outside Mr Bell's door. He worked at night and slept in the afternoon with his curtains closed.
One day, Mr Bell came outside and asked them to stop. The children became quiet, but they did not understand why he was angry. Their parents met him that evening, and he explained his working hours without blaming the children.
Together, they agreed that running games belonged in the courtyard, not the hallway. The parents would open the courtyard gate after school. Mr Bell also asked for quiet near his door between two and five, when he needed to sleep.
On Friday, the children drew a colorful sign for the hallway. It showed walking feet and a smiling moon. Mr Bell put it beside his door with their permission. The next afternoon, he heard only gentle steps, followed by laughter from the courtyard.
