The walking club planned an easy route through a meadow beside the village. Alex read the message and put on his light summer shoes. The sky was clear, and he expected dry paths. He forgot about the heavy rain from the night before.
At the meeting point, the leader warned everyone about wet grass. She offered a shorter route on a hard path for people without strong shoes. Alex wanted to stay with his friends, but water was already entering his shoes near the gate.
He chose the shorter route with two other walkers. They followed the village lane to a stone bridge, then continued beside the meadow. Through the fence, they could see the main group moving slowly across the wet ground in their boots.
Both groups met at the visitor centre. Alex's spare socks were in his bag, so he changed them before sitting down. His friends arrived with muddy boots and tired legs. They compared the birds they had seen, and Alex had spotted one bird that the others had missed.
