Lena could type quickly when she looked at the keyboard. When she looked at the screen, however, her fingers stopped moving. She joined a short adult typing course because her office work included many letters and she wanted to check the screen more often.
During the second lesson, the teacher placed a light cloth over each student's hands. Nobody could see the keys. Lena immediately made several mistakes and felt much slower than before. She wanted to lift the cloth, but the teacher suggested trying one short line first.
The line contained only four different letters. Lena found the starting keys by touch and typed carefully. After three attempts, every letter was correct. The next line added two more letters, and she needed to start again several times.
At the end of class, she removed the cloth and typed her name without looking down. It was a small success, not a complete new skill. She booked ten minutes on her home computer each evening to practise the next set of letters.
