The Translation of One Ordinary Word

When Mei returned to her hometown to help her aunt move, she discovered she could no longer name several household objects in her first language. She pointed at a kitchen utensil and described its purpose until her aunt supplied the word. They laughed, but Mei felt a small panic. She had imagined language as luggage that stayed packed until needed.

At dinner, her cousins teased her gently about her foreign accent. She responded by using a formal expression from childhood textbooks, which made them laugh harder. Nobody intended cruelty. Nevertheless, Mei became quieter, afraid that each sentence would expose how far she had travelled from the person they expected. She volunteered to wash dishes so she could stop speaking for a while.

Her aunt joined her at the sink and asked about a word on the new washing machine. It was in English. Mei explained it, then found she lacked an exact equivalent and had to describe its function. Her aunt accepted the explanation without treating the missing word as a personal failure. Together, they pressed the correct button and listened for water.

Before leaving, Mei wrote the household words in her phone. She did not announce a plan to recover perfect fluency. On the flight home, she sent her aunt a voice message and paused twice while searching for words. The reply concerned a missing saucepan lid, not her accent. Mei checked her bag, found it wrapped inside a towel and laughed in both languages without noticing which came first.
