The Recipe With No Measurements

Nina wanted to serve her grandmother's bean stew at a dinner for friends. The handwritten recipe listed ingredients but offered no quantities, explaining only that she should add enough water and cook until ready. Nina remembered the flavour clearly. Unfortunately, remembering a flavour did not tell her whether enough meant one cup or an entire jug of water.

She called two cousins. One insisted the stew contained smoked peppers; the other said their grandmother hated them. Both spoke with the certainty of witnesses giving evidence. Nina tried a small pot with peppers and another without. Neither tasted right, and the kitchen filled with dishes while the afternoon she had planned so carefully gradually disappeared around her.

When her guests arrived, she was about to apologise for failing to recreate the dish. One friend tasted it and asked for more salt. The ordinary request brought her back to the table. These people had come to eat with her, not to test the accuracy of an edible memory. She passed the salt and served the pot she preferred.

Later, Nina wrote down the amounts she had actually used. At the top, she put her grandmother's name followed by her own. She sent the recipe to both cousins, who immediately suggested corrections. This time, she found their disagreement funny. Next month, they would each bring a version to lunch. There would be three pots on the table and no official judge.
