The Actor Reading Someone Else’s Experience

A charity planned a campaign using accounts from people who had struggled to access public services. To protect contributors, producer Len hired actors to read their words. The first video was moving, but the director asked him to remove the opening label explaining that an actor was speaking. Viewers might take the account less seriously, she argued.

Len believed the original account and wanted the campaign to succeed. Still, the actor's careful pauses and steady eye contact were part of a performance, not a recording of the contributor remembering events. Removing the label would invite viewers to misunderstand how the video had been made. The contributor had approved the script on the assumption that her identity would remain separate from the person on screen.

Len showed her both versions privately. She preferred the labelled one and asked for a small correction to a sentence the director had shortened. The missing words explained that one member of staff had tried to help her. Without them, the account sounded like an accusation against everyone in the office. Len restored the sentence despite the extra running time.

The campaign launched with a clear actor label and a note that the words had been approved by the contributor. Donations were modest, and the director wondered whether a more dramatic version would have performed better. Len could not prove otherwise. At the screening, the actor introduced herself by her own name, then stepped aside while the contributor's approved words appeared on screen. The separation made the room quieter, but it did not make the experience less worthy of attention.
