The Emergency Page Without Decorations

During a regional power failure, the council's emergency website loaded so slowly that many residents could not open it on weak mobile connections. Web designer Priya watched an animated logo circle above a blank page. The site had won praise for its appearance only a month earlier. Now its impressive features were standing between people and basic information.

The communications director wanted to publish a video statement from the council leader. Priya suggested a plain text page listing open public buildings, update times and a telephone number. The director worried that such a page would look unofficial and could be copied by anyone. Priya replied that the current design was already failing to establish trust because it would not load.

She worked with the emergency team to verify each line before publication. They removed decorative images, unnecessary scripts and a form that requested residents' locations before showing information. A simple address search remained optional. The page was less elegant than the launch version, but it appeared quickly even on Priya's old spare phone. She asked a colleague outside the office to test it too.

When power returned, the director proposed restoring the original site immediately. Priya kept the emergency page available and recommended testing future designs under poor connection conditions. At the review meeting, she brought screenshots of both versions. One looked richer; the other contained the information residents had actually been able to read. The council retained its visual identity, but its next design brief began with a different question: what must still work when almost everything else does not?
