The Digital Mural Nobody Could Sell

Five artists created a digital mural for a community centre. Each contributed drawings, and programmer Esme made them move when visitors walked past. The group had agreed to share credit, but had said little about future income. Then a hotel chain offered a substantial fee for a copy to display in its reception areas.

Two artists welcomed the offer, while another disliked the chain's employment practices. Esme worried about maintaining installations in buildings she had never visited. The fifth artist, Arlo, had moved abroad and was difficult to contact. The centre manager assumed that owning the screen meant she could approve the sale. Nobody had intended to deceive anyone; their original enthusiasm had simply left important questions unwritten.

A mediator helped them separate the physical equipment, the individual drawings and the shared interactive work. They discovered that there was no single permission one person could give. The hotel wanted a quick answer and would not wait indefinitely. When Arlo finally replied, he supported licensing a new version but asked to withdraw one drawing that had become personally painful for him.

By then, the hotel had chosen another installation. The artists were disappointed for different reasons, and the meeting ended without celebration. Over the following month, they wrote an agreement covering future adaptations, maintenance and withdrawal requests. The community mural continued moving above the entrance. Esme watched it one evening and thought about the lost fee. Clarifying ownership had not produced a profitable ending. It had prevented the first paying stranger from deciding how their collaboration would work.
