A children's museum had built an exhibition around a cooperative puzzle game. Visitors moved physical blocks while a screen displayed their progress. When the developer announced that its servers would close, technician Mo realised the blocks would soon become expensive wooden ornaments. The museum owned the equipment but not the software needed to run it independently.

The developer was a tiny studio with unpaid bills, not a distant corporation with unlimited resources. Its founder offered an apology and suggested buying a newer game from another supplier. Mo understood the financial difficulty, yet the museum had purchased an exhibition expected to last several years. Replacing it immediately would consume funds reserved for accessible visitor guides.

Mo asked whether a local version of the game could be released. The founder initially refused because parts of the software belonged to outside contributors. Together they identified which features depended on those parts. A simplified version could run without online scores or animated celebrations, provided the museum paid for a few days of development. Mo presented this option alongside the cost of complete replacement.

The museum chose the simpler version. At the reopening, a child complained that the screen no longer showered winners with stars. Then another child discovered that the wooden blocks could support an extra challenge invented by the visitors themselves. Mo did not claim the reduced game was better in every way. It was, however, playable without a distant server, and the museum now held the instructions and permissions needed to keep it that way.
