An Empty Box on the Form

The sports centre introduced online registration to replace its crowded reception queue. Manager Sonia tested the form and found it quick and clear. On Monday, however, a swimming instructor brought her six paper applications. Each applicant had stopped at the same compulsory box asking for an emergency contact. None had someone they felt able to name.

The information had an obvious purpose, and Sonia did not want to remove it casually. Yet refusing access to people without close relationships seemed a strange way to promote community wellbeing. A developer suggested letting applicants type any word into the box. That would solve the technical problem while filling the centre's records with information nobody could rely on.

Sonia asked reception staff what they had done before the form existed. They had discussed the situation privately and recorded that no contact was available. The new system had not invented the requirement, but it had removed the human judgement surrounding it. She requested an explicit alternative and a short explanation of how the information would be used.

The revised form offered a choice to speak privately with reception or continue without naming a contact. Staff also reviewed their emergency procedures so they would not depend entirely on calling relatives. Registrations resumed, including one from a retired diving coach. He later volunteered to help with adult beginners. Sonia was pleased, but she did not present him as proof that the change had been worthwhile. People did not need to become useful volunteers to deserve a place in the pool.
