The Library Card Without a History

Every January, librarian Tomas deleted the borrowing records that were no longer needed. This year, the library board asked him to preserve them for a reading recommendation service. The company offering it promised to suggest books that residents would love. Its presentation included colourful examples, although nobody explained why it needed years of identifiable records.

Tomas liked helpful technology. He also remembered how often people borrowed books about subjects they did not want to discuss at the desk. A title could suggest a private worry without proving anything at all. When he raised this concern, a board member argued that readers already shared much more information with commercial shops. Tomas wondered whether that made the library's responsibility smaller or larger.

He invited several readers to try a demonstration that used invented borrowing histories. Some enjoyed the suggestions. Others found them repetitive, especially when the system kept recommending books about a problem they had already solved. One reader proposed choosing a few favourite titles voluntarily rather than importing an entire record. The company said it could offer that version, but setup would cost extra.

The board approved the more expensive option for a short trial. Tomas deleted the old records as usual, then helped the first participant select three books. She included a mystery she had disliked because she wanted recommendations that challenged her taste. The machine looked briefly confused on screen. Tomas laughed with her, relieved that the conversation began with what she chose to reveal rather than what the library happened to remember.
