The Sculpture Inside the Scanner

The city museum invited visitors to scan its sculptures and explore them on their phones. For curator Hana, this was a practical way to reach people who could not climb the building's stairs. Then sculptor Nico arrived with a cheap plastic copy of his bronze bird. An online seller had produced it from the museum's downloadable scan.

Nico had lent the museum the original bird, not permission to distribute manufacturing files. Hana opened the exhibition agreement and discovered that digital access had been described in a single vague sentence. She had assumed the scans were comparable to photographs. Nico argued that a file designed for three-dimensional printing offered something rather different from a picture on a wall.

Removing the scan would limit access for visitors who used touch to explore objects. Hana brought this up carefully, afraid it would sound like an excuse. Nico surprised her by asking to meet those visitors. At a workshop, he watched a woman examine a printed bird with both hands. She noticed a curve that most sighted visitors passed without comment.

He allowed the museum to keep producing tactile copies for its own workshops, but asked it to stop offering the full file for unrestricted download. Hana revised the agreement and published a plain explanation of the change. They could not retrieve copies already circulating online. Nico kept the cheap version on his desk as a reminder of that failure. Beside it, he placed the museum's workshop schedule, which he had volunteered to join.
