Our village volleyball team elected a captain every spring. This year, the vote was tied between Bea and Martin. Nobody wanted another long meeting, so we agreed to have two captains. At first, this sounded fair. By the following weekend, it had become surprisingly confusing for everyone.
Bea sent a message saying that practice would begin at six. Martin booked the hall for seven, believing that more people could come later. Half the team arrived early and waited outside in the rain. I wondered whether two helpful people could somehow make one very unhelpful system.
We met in the entrance and talked before touching a ball. Bea liked planning exercises, while Martin preferred dealing with bookings and payments. Neither particularly wanted the other's tasks. They divided the work and chose one shared calendar. Any change would appear there before a message went to the players.
A month later, we lost our first competitive match by several points. Nobody could blame the calendar, because we had arrived together and on time. Bea suggested a different practice activity, and Martin booked the hall. We still had two captains, but now we knew which questions to ask each one. That made losing easier to discuss.
