The badminton club played in a school hall every Thursday evening. Its electronic scoreboard had stopped working, and the club could not afford a replacement that month. Usually this would not matter, but two visiting teams were coming for a friendly competition. Rosa had promised to organise it.
She considered cancelling the event. Then she remembered the empty cardboard boxes behind her desk at work. With permission, she took three home and cut them into square cards. She painted large numbers on both sides, hoping that everyone in the hall would be able to read them.
During the first match, the cards worked perfectly until an open door let in a sudden wind. Several numbers flew under the players' chairs. Rosa almost laughed, although she was responsible for the mess. A visitor suggested hanging the cards on two strings instead of standing them on a table.
They made the change during the break, and the rest of the evening went smoothly. The final match ended with a narrow victory for the visitors. When their captain asked where they had bought the scoreboard, Rosa showed him the boxes. He photographed the design, not the result. Apparently, his own club had an even smaller budget.
