A Second Invitation to Paint

After a disagreement about money, friends Celeste and Mary had not spoken for nearly a year. There had been no dramatic final argument, only shorter messages followed by silence. Celeste missed Mary, but she did not know how to begin a conversation without reopening every difficult detail.

One afternoon, she saw a notice for a painting session they had once enjoyed together. She sent Mary the date and added that there was no pressure to reply. Mary answered the next morning. She could not attend that session, but asked whether the following Saturday might work.

They met outside the studio, both looking slightly nervous. Before going in, Celeste said she still thought they should discuss what had happened. Mary agreed, but suggested that they paint first. Sitting side by side felt easier than facing each other across a table with nothing to do.

Their conversation began with colours and moved gradually towards the old disagreement. Neither changed every opinion, but both admitted that they had made unfair assumptions. When the session ended, Mary had painted a crooked house and Celeste an enormous yellow tree. They arranged another meeting, this time for coffee. There was no promise that everything would return to its old shape. For now, there was simply a second invitation, and both of them wanted to accept it.
