The Secret That Was Not Mine

When Theo told his cousin Liv that he was planning to leave his job, he asked her to keep it private. Nothing was final, and he wanted to speak to his parents himself. Liv agreed. Later that week, their aunt asked whether Theo seemed unusually quiet recently.

Liv nearly explained everything. She thought the news might help their aunt understand him, and family members usually shared important changes. Then she remembered that Theo had trusted her with information, not with the right to announce it. She said he could answer questions about his plans better than she could.

The aunt looked disappointed and asked again. Liv repeated that it was not her story to tell. She did not pretend to know nothing, which would have felt dishonest, but she offered no details. Afterwards, she messaged Theo to say that his aunt had asked about him.

Two days later, Theo spoke to his parents and then called the rest of the family. At dinner, the aunt joked that Liv was excellent at keeping secrets. Liv felt awkward until Theo thanked her plainly. He said that choosing when to speak had helped him feel more confident about a difficult decision. Liv was relieved. Keeping quiet had not been unfriendly; it had allowed someone else to use his own voice.
