When Bea visited her grandfather, he gave her a jar of plum jam labelled with the date. Beneath it, in smaller writing, were the words your grandmother's favourite. Bea had never met her grandmother. Until then, the woman had seemed to belong mainly to formal photographs and family birthdays.
Bea asked what else she had liked. Her grandfather began with ordinary answers: strong tea, soft pears and sitting near an open window. Then he described her habit of saving the last piece of toast for their dog. Bea was surprised. The grandmother in the photographs looked too serious for secret toast deliveries.
On her next visit, Bea brought several blank labels. She suggested adding a memory to each jar her grandfather made. He chose one about a rainy holiday and another about a terrible pair of yellow shoes. Some labels were so long that the writing continued around the glass.
They gave the jars to different family members, who began sending their own memories back. Bea kept the plum jar on her kitchen shelf even after the jam was gone. Inside, she placed the little notes that arrived. Her grandmother was still someone she had never known, but no longer someone she could describe only by a name and a date beneath an old photograph.
