The Walk With No Questions

After losing his brother, Elliot found visits exhausting. People arrived with food and kind intentions, but most wanted to know how he was feeling. He rarely had a clear answer. Some days he was sad; other days he simply wanted to discuss the broken gate outside his building.

His friend Mo sent a different invitation: a twenty-minute walk, no questions required. Elliot accepted because the offer sounded manageable. They met by the gate, which refused to close properly. Mo gave it a careful look and said it needed a new spring. Elliot was grateful for the ordinary beginning.

They walked around the block and talked about a shop that had changed its window display. Halfway home, Elliot mentioned that his brother would have hated the bright orange chairs inside. Mo did not turn the comment into a serious interview. He simply asked whether the chairs were worse than the café's old purple ones.

Elliot laughed, then told a short story about his brother buying an ugly sofa. When they reached the gate, he asked if they could walk again on Thursday. Mo agreed and wrote the time down. There had been space to remember his brother, but no demand to do so. For that afternoon, it was exactly the kind of company Elliot could accept.
