We Kept the Uneven Quilt

Three sisters planned to finish the quilt their mother had started before she died. Each chose a section to sew at home. They imagined joining the pieces at the end of the month and laying the completed quilt across their mother's bed for one final photograph.

When they met, the sections were different sizes. Ella's stitches were neat, June had chosen thick cloth, and Ruth had accidentally turned one pattern sideways. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then June suggested taking everything apart and asking someone experienced to finish it properly for them.

Ruth objected. She had spent several evenings sewing while remembering their mother, and she did not want those hours removed simply because the result looked uneven. Ella agreed, although she had originally hoped for something perfect. They spread the pieces on the floor and considered how to connect them.

They added narrow strips between the sections and stitched their names along one edge. The finished quilt was not square enough for the photograph they had imagined. Instead, they carried it to the sofa and sat beneath it together. Ruth's sideways pattern rested over June's knees. They decided the quilt would travel between their homes each winter, starting with the sister whose sitting room was coldest. It already had more than one family story inside it.
