Whenever Fatima told her friend Jade about a problem, Jade immediately suggested a solution. She sent useful links, made lists and sometimes contacted people who might help. Fatima knew these actions came from kindness, but she had begun to avoid mentioning anything difficult at all.
One evening, Fatima arrived upset after an argument with her brother. Jade reached for her phone before Fatima had finished the first sentence. This time, Fatima asked her to put it down. She needed to explain what had happened, not prepare a plan for fixing her family.
Jade looked embarrassed. She said that listening without doing anything made her feel useless. Fatima pointed to the kettle and asked for a cup of tea. That was something practical Jade could do while listening. By the time the water boiled, Fatima had finished explaining the argument.
Instead of offering advice, Jade asked whether Fatima wanted ideas or simply company. Fatima chose company, and they watched a cooking programme together. Later, she asked Jade to help her write a calmer message to her brother. Jade was glad to help, but she waited until she was invited. Their new question became a familiar part of the friendship: should I listen, or shall we think about what to do?
